Dickinson College Professor Adrienne Su to Sign New Book of Poetry at Whistlestop
Adrienne Su, associate professor of English and poet-in-residence at Dickinson College, will mark the release of "Having None of It," her third book of poetry, with a book signing and reading February 27, from 6:30 to 8 p.m., at the Whistlestop Bookshop on 129 W. High Street in Carlisle.
In "Having None of It" ($13.95, Manic D Press), Su said she combines a number of concerns — "a fragmentary immigrant narrative, struggles with gender roles and parenthood, the impossibility (for most) of 'having it all' if 'having it all' means career, family, and marriage for both men and women."
Su drew on her own experience to tell the stories of others. While parts of the book employ the voices of others — including men, communities and Chinese immigrants in the American South — "those are the things I needed to imagine in order to reconcile some of the contradictions I face because of who I am," she said. "I wouldn't have been drawn to these particular fictions if I hadn't been challenged so often — and often unintentionally — by preconceptions about what constitutes a Southerner, an American, a good mother, a good mother who has a career, and — if this is even in the culture — a good single mother who has a career."
Su's other published works include "Middle Kingdom" (Alice James Books) in 1997 and "Sanctuary" (Manic D Press) in 2006. Recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship, Su has held residencies at Yaddo and the MacDowell Colony, and published poems in numerous literary journals and anthologies.
"Having None of It" will be available February 20 at Manic D Press (which offers free shipping), the Whistlestop Bookshop, www.amazon.com, www.powells.com and the Dickinson College bookstore in the lower level of the Holland Union Building (HUB) at West High and North College streets in Carlisle.
