Greencastle, Ind. — "I have moments every single day when I ask myself, 'How am I still doing this?'" says Elisabeth W. "Bess" Evans, regional field director for Senator Barack Obama's presidential campaign. "And then it's like, 'How could I not still be doing this?'," adds Evans, who is featured in today's Lafayette Journal and Courier.
"Evans, a native of Evanston, Ill., went to school at DePauw University and got her first political experience volunteering for Indiana campaigns," writes Dorothy Schneider. Now in Indiana for the upcoming primary, "she's able to reconnect with her networks here for the first time since diving into Obama's Iowa campaign two weeks after her May 2007 graduation."
The article notes, "Evans has put 50,000 miles on her car in the past year," working in more than a half dozen states on behalf of Obama. Schneider writes, "When Evans went to school in Greencastle she started volunteering for local campaigns — 'rarely paid, except with pizza.' She began following Obama after hearing his speech at the 2004 Democratic National Convention. 'I saw the way divisive politics played a role, not just in the national races but for very local races. And folks were feeling the effect of divisive politics,' Evans said. She said she believes in Obama's goal of mending those political bridges."
The newspaper reports that Evans is still unsure whether she'll log the long and hard hours campaigning requires in the future, "but she wants to continue working for social change. She said, 'Absolutely I would like to be a part of this movement and this campaign as long as I could be.'"
