CLAREMONT, CA. — Two additional Scripps College students have been named Fulbright scholars, bringing the total number of Fulbright winners this year at Scripps to four. Hannah Alberts '08 will spend a year in a university in Russia as an English teaching assistant, followed by a summer 2009 project in a language camp sponsored by the U.S. Embassy in Russia. Her funding will also allow the physics major to carry out an independent research project of her choosing. Mikaela Rodriguez '08, a pre-med biology major, will teach English to Indonesian high school students by utilizing a dynamic, full-immersion methodology; outside the classroom, she plans to work on community-building ecological projects, as well as learn more about jamu, the local tradition of herbal medicine practiced for centuries.
As previously announced, Ivy McDaniel '08 will travel to Bergen, Norway, for a 10-month appointment to conduct research at the Sars International Centre for Marine Molecular Biology. Laura McPherson '08 will use her Fulbright award to pursue linguistic fieldwork on the little known Tommo-So language spoken in the Dogon region of Mali. |
