Swarthmore College Announces New VP for Development, Alumni Relations

SWARTHMORE, Pa. Feb. 25, 2008 - Stephen D. Bayer has been named the new Vice President for Development and Alumni Relations for Swarthmore College, effective immediately. Bayer emerged in a national search as the search committee's unanimous and enthusiastic choice.

“Stephen will offer inspired and empowering leadership to our dynamic development and alumni relations teams,” said President Alfred H. Bloom. “His care for individuals and for this institution, his magnetic persuasive talent, and his imaginative vision will give authentic and powerful voice to the core values of this community and bring ever increasing numbers of alumni, parents, and friends closer to the College in affection, esteem, and support.”

Bayer graduated cum laude from Tufts University where he earned a Bachelor of Arts and subsequently received a J.D. from Emory University School of Law. After receiving his law degree, he practiced commercial litigation for Mesirov, Gelman, Jaffee, Cramer and Jamison. He next proved his entrepreneurial acumen in the business world working for CMS Companies, an international personal investment banking firm, and then as co-founder and president of Net Recovery LLC, a full service benefits recovery company.

Bayer joined Swarthmore’s development staff as Associate Director for Planned Giving in 2001. He quickly rose to Director of Capital Gifts, then to Director of Principal Gifts, then in 2006 to Director of Development, and has been most recently serving as Acting Vice President.

Founded in 1864 outside Philadelphia, Swarthmore is a highly selective liberal arts college whose mission combines academic rigor with social responsibility.  With an enrollment of 1,450 students, Swarthmore is distinguished by its unique honors program and Lang Center for Civic and Social Responsibility.
