SAN ANTONIO, Nov. 7, 2007 - More than 3,000 Trinity University students who have traveled overseas during their academic tenure have had an international resource in Nancy Ericksen, study abroad counselor at the University. Now a professional organization has recognized her talents as well, bestowing upon her a Lifetime Achievement Award.
Given by the Institute for the International Education of Students at a recent conference in Chicago, the IES Lifetime Achievement award recognizes individuals who demonstrate dedication and commitment to the study abroad field and whose career is distinguished by significant achievements and contributions. The award includes a $1,000 honorarium used for travel to any city in the world where IES has a program.
Mary Dwyer, president of the IES, praised Ericksen for being "a strong advocate for students in every discussion of policy matters."
Ericksen has worked in the study abroad field since 1986. At Trinity University, she is responsible for coordinating study abroad programs. She has served on various University committees, and in 1999, she received the Rhea Fern Malsbury Memorial Award for outstanding service to Trinity. Ericksen received the Lily Von Klemperer Award from the National Association of Foreign Student Advisers: Association of International Educators (NAFSA) in 2000 for her role in education abroad. She also is past chair of NAFSA’s Education Abroad Knowledge Community, and is a member of the Forum on Education Abroad.
“Whatever I have done in study abroad, I have done because I believe passionately that it makes a difference, both to the individual who goes abroad and to our society as a whole," said Ericksen. "To be recognized by the people whose good opinion matters most to me for acting on that belief is amazing."
Ericksen has a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of California at Davis. She also has organized, promoted, and taught English as a second language in a number of cities.
Since 1950, IES has provided study abroad programs and is a leading not-for-profit organization, enrolling more than 5,000 students annually. It is an academic consortium of more than 165 U.S. colleges and universities and provides 75 programs in 31 cities throughout the world.
