Female Muslim Comic to Perform at Trinity University
SAN ANTONIO, Oct. 3, 2007 - Tissa Hami, one of the world’s few Muslim stand-up comediennes, will give a performance at Trinity that, according to her Web site, will leave her audience in "shock and awe." Hami will perform at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 18, in Chapman Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public.
Hami, an Iranian-American, will set her sharp wit on several targets, including Islamic fundamentalists, white liberals and good old-fashioned racists. At the same time she hopes her comedy will break down stereotypes about Muslim women and help foster understanding between Iranians and Americans.
Hami grew up in a traditional Iranian family in a predominantly white Boston suburb. She holds bachelor’s and masters degrees in international affairs.
Her lecture is part of Trinity University’s Difficult Dialogues initiative. For the entire fall semester, Trinity will host a series of events to examine the issue of Islamophobia. Funding for the Difficult Dialogues initiative is provided by the Ford Foundation.
