"FCC Can't Ignore" Satellite Radio, DePauw Professor Tells Fort Worth Star-Telegram

Jeff McCall 2006.jpgGREENCASTLE, Ind., Jan. 9, 2006  - Howard Stern made his debut on satellite radio this week, and an article in Texas' Fort Worth Star-Telegram examines the implications of the move and offers analysis from "Jeff McCall, a professor of communications at Indiana's DePauw University." Of traditional radio, which has been increasingly moving to syndicated programs, Dr. McCall says, "They need to go back to their strengths, having somebody local there. Think about the stations that don't have [a] word of local news anymore."

The story by Cary Darling quotes a number of media insiders and analysts. Among the issues discussed -- whether the Federal Communications Commission will one day consider regulating cable and Stern Limbaugh TIME.jpgsatellite TV and radio outlets. "I'm not predicting this, but it's something the FCC will [eventually] have to discuss," McCall, a 1976 graduate of DePauw, tells the newspaper. "Cable TV is distributed over wires that's on publicly held property and the satellite frequencies that Sirius and XM broadcast on are controlled by the FCC as well... The [National Association of Broadcasters] is leaning very hard on the FCC to go in the direction to provide oversight and regulation. This is going to be something the FCC can't ignore."
