Franklin & Marshall College Basketball Coach Closes in on 700 Wins

Robinson already winningest coach in Division III history

LANCASTER, Pa., Nov. 17 -- On Valentine's Day 2004, Franklin & Marshall men's basketball coach Glenn Robinson made sweet history when his cagers beat Muhlenberg College, 75-52, in Mayser Gymnasium. That victory established Robinson as the all-time winningest coach in Division III, with 667 wins to his credit.

Now, a year and a half later, with a 697-242 mark under his belt, Robinson is about to achieve another milestone - with just three more "W"s, he will become the 25th member of the exclusive 700-win club, and only the 10th active member, joining such luminaries as Bobby Knight (Texas Tech), Don Meyer (Northern State), Herb Magee (Philadelphia), Eddie Sutton (Oklahoma State), Lute Olson (Arizona), John Chaney (Temple), Mike Krzyzewski (Duke), Jim Boeheim (Syracuse), and Jim Calhoun (Connecticut).

Robinson, who has spent his entire career at Franklin & Marshall, could achieve that goal as early as Nov. 22. The Diplomats kick off the year at the annual Sponaugle Tournament Nov. 18-19 (with Trinity College, Gwynned-Mercy, and SUNY-Cortland), and follow up with home games against Juniata (Nov. 22), and Swarthmore (Nov. 27). The Diplomats then take to the road for games against Gettysburg (Nov. 29) and Lebanon Valley College (Dec. 1).

Robinson, a 1967 graduate of West Chester University, has guided the Diplomats to the Division III Final Four four times and was named Basketball Times Division III "Coach of the Year" in 1991. He has earned conference and National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) regional "Coach of the Year" honors 12 times.

Robinson also boasts another unusual statistic - every men's basketball class that has graduated from Franklin & Marshall since 1975 has won a conference title and earned a trip to the NCAA tournament.

Robinson, a native of Yeadon, Pa., was inducted into his alma mater's Hall of Fame in 2004. He earned degrees in health and physical education (B.S. and M.Ed.). While at West Chester, he was a member of the Rams basketball and baseball teams. He joined the Franklin & Marshall College basketball staff in 1968 and was promoted to head coach in 1971.
