'Raising a Team Player': Book Teaches Kids Lasting Values

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass., June 11 (AScribe Newswire) -- Storey Books has announced the publication of "Raising a Team Player: Teaching Kids Lasting Values on the Field, on the Court, and on the Bench" by Harry Sheehy with Danny Peary.

Sheehy is director of athletics at Williams College.

As anger, selfishness, and win-at-all-costs attitudes increasingly pervade what was formerly known as fun and games, "Raising a Team Player" reaffirms the purity of athletics and the lasting value of its lessons.

"We have lost a generation of young athletes to our misguided sense of values," Sheehy writes. "Let's not lose another. Let's act differently."

Drawing from a passion that fueled 20 years of coaching, Sheehy shows parents how to turn the high-pressure situations inherent to sports into true teaching moments that endow kids with skills that will serve them for years to come.

"I applaud Harry's enthusiastic commitment to making integrity, character, and sportsmanship the most important lessons kids learn in sports," wrote Bill Cosby about the book.

Sheehy coached the men's basketball team at his alma mater, Williams College, for 17 years. He was selected Northeast Coach of the Year in 1990, 1997, and 1998, Eastern Basketball magazine's Coach of the Year in 1998, and Conference Coach of the Year in 2000. Since 2000, he has served as the athletic director at Williams.

Danny Peary is a freelance writer specializing in sports and cinema. He writes for former baseball star and current sport analyst Tim McCarver's weekly television show.
