Connecticut College Student "Blogs" from Czech Republic
 |
A Connecticut College junior who is studying in the Czech Republic this semester is the college’s first official blogger, writing about her experiences —from an evening at the opera in Prague to musings about the Czech response to Nazi occupation during World War II — in real time.
The blog is located at http://oak.conncoll.edu/~satablog/blog/ (or one can search for “sata blog” on the college’s home page at www.conncoll.edu).
Marina Ivanova, a Bulgarian native, is in the Czech Republic for a Study Away, Teach Away (SATA) program. It is Ivanova’s first return to Europe since she left Bulgaria in 1996. In addition to her reflections, she will post comments from the other Connecticut College students as they live and study in Prague.
A SATA group typically is composed of 10 to 20 students led by a faculty member or two. The groups interact with local communities as part of their studies. Connecticut College professors and students have studied in Greece, India, Italy, Mexico, Peru, South Africa and Vietnam.
Eva Eckert, professor of Slavic studies, heads this year’s SATA there with 10 students. She and her students previously studied there in 1999 and 2002. Her native city is “not easily assimilated by Americans,” she said.
Ranked among the most selective private liberal arts colleges in the nation, Connecticut College enrolls 1,900 men and women from 46 states and 40 countries. The college is known for putting the liberal arts into action through interdisciplinary studies, international programs, funded internships, student-faculty research and service learning. Founded in 1911, the college operates under an 83-year-old honor code. The college is located at 270 Mohegan Ave, New London, about two hours by car from Boston and New York. The 750-acre campus is an arboretum overlooking Long Island Sound. For more information, visit www.connecticutcollege.edu.
