AMHERST, Mass., March 31 (AScribe Newswire) -- Hampshire College is honoring documentary photographer Jerome Liebling with a special exhibition of his photographs and a ceremony naming the college's film and photography building for him.
The exhibition, "Jerome Liebling: Selected Photographs," will hang in the college gallery April 7-24, with an opening reception on April 7 from 4-6 p.m. The show will include 70 photographs spanning Liebling's career, with half of them shown publicly for the first time.
The naming ceremony for The Jerome Liebling Center for Film, Video and Photography will be held on April 24 at 4 p.m., part of a weekend of events celebrating Liebling and the college's film, video and photography program. [See list of scheduled events below.]
Now professor emeritus, Liebling joined the Hampshire faculty in 1969, the year before the college opened, founding a film and photography program that has in three decades turned out a stunningly accomplished group of alumni. Alumni of the program have won Academy, Emmy, Peabody, Sundance and People's Choice awards; Guggenheim, NEA and Fulbright fellowships; the National Press Photographers Association's Picture of the Year; and the International Documentary Association's Career Achievement and Emerging Documentary Filmmaker awards.
Liebling's own work hangs in the permanent collections of major museums and galleries around the world, as well as in private collections. His books include The People, Yes! (1995), Jerome Liebling Photographs (1988), The Photographs of Jerome Liebling, 1947-1977 (1978) and the award-winning The Dickinsons of Amherst (2001).
He was appointed as the first Walker Evans Visiting Professor of Photography at Yale University in academic year 1976-77. Among major exhibitions that have included his work are "American Politicians" at New York's Museum of Modern Art, "Flora Photographica" at the Serpentine Gallery in London and "Jerome Liebling: Photographs" at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
Jerome Liebling retired from active teaching in 1990, but both his commitment to his own creative projects and his connections to Hampshire College remain strong.
