Former Sen. Alan Simpson examines "The Senate: Past and Present"

Talk at Lewis & Clark College part of "Advice and Consent" series

(Portland, Ore.)—Former Senator Alan Simpson (R-Wyo.) will give a lecture titled “The Senate: Past and Present” on Monday, Nov. 17, at 3:30 p.m., in the Council Chamber in Templeton Student Center on the Lewis & Clark College campus (0615 S.W. Palatine Hill Road).

“Alan Simpson has distinguished himself to be one of the more articulate, humorous and provocative senators in recent years,” said Robert Eisinger, associate professor and chair of political science and codirector of the Advice and Consent Project. “His insights and remarks will provide a spark to fuel campus and community discussions how representative democracy works and how it should work.”

Simpson was first elected to the U.S. Senate in 1978 and served for 18 years until his retirement in 1996. He served as assistant majority leader, assistant minority leader, and chairman of the Veterans Affairs Committee. Simpson served as director of the Institute of Politics at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government from 1998 to 2000. He has been a visiting lecturer in political science at the University of Wyoming and serves on numerous corporate and nonprofit boards. He is a partner in the law firm of Burg Simpson Eldredge and Hersh. He is the author of “Right in the Old Gazoo: A Lifetime of Scrapping with the Press.” Simpson earned his bachelor of science degree from the University of Wyoming and his J.D. from that university’s law school.

The lecture is free and open to the public. It is presented by Lewis & Clark’s political science department and sponsored in part by the Pacific Northwest Political Science Association and through a generous grant from the Arkay Foundation. Parking is available on campus lots for a small fee. The College is located at 0615 S.W. Palatine Hill Road. For more information, call 503-768-7640.
