Former U.S. Education Secretary Riley Joins Furman University Board of Trustees


GREENVILLE, S.C. –  Former U.S. Secretary of Education Richard W. Riley has joined the Furman University Board of Trustees.

             Riley, a 1954 Furman graduate who served two terms as U.S. Education Secretary during the Clinton administration, was one of seven new members who attended their first board meeting Oct. 26.  Riley will serve a three-year term that is renewable up to six years.

The new trustees included former National Football League running back Stanford Jennings, a 1984 graduate currently residing in Alpharetta, Ga.  Jennings played a total of nine years in the NFL with the Cincinnati Bengals, New Orleans Saints and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

The other new Furman trustees are Larry D. Estridge of Greenville, S.C., H. Neel Hipp of Greenville, S.C., William B. Howes of Flat Rock, N.C., Carl F. Kohrt, Jr., of Columbus, Ohio, and Kathleen C. McKinney of Greenville, S.C.  There were also two emeritus  members added to the board – Ralph S. Hendricks of Simpsonville, S.C., and William R. Timmons, Jr., of Greenville, S.C.

Riley is a native of Greenville who returned to his hometown after leaving Washington in 2001.  He not only served two terms as U.S. Secretary of Education (1993-2001), but two terms as Governor of South Carolina (1979-1987).  He is currently a senior partner in the law firm of Nelson Mullins Riley & Scarborough, L.L.P.  He has been appointed Distinguished Professor at Furman, and serves as the Advisory Board Chair of the university’s Richard W. Riley Institute of Government, Politics and Public Leadership.  It is Riley’s first term on the Furman board.
