Dickinson College Receives Statewide Green Power Award

CARLISLE, Pa., Oct. 23 (AScribe Newswire) -- Dickinson College has been recognized with a Green Power Award for its commitment to the environment by purchasing wind-generated electricity from Pennsylvania wind farms. This award and numerous others presented on Oct. 23 in Philadelphia by the Citizens for Pennsylvania's Future (PennFuture) honored the individuals, private industries, government agencies and public interest organizations that are making Pennsylvania and the Mid-Atlantic region a thriving renewable energy market.

The Green Colleges honor from PennFuture recognizes Dickinson College and the Pennsylvania Consortium for Interdisciplinary Environmental Policy, which has assisted 25 member colleges, including Dickinson, in purchasing and promoting clean electricity on their campuses. Dickinson purchases 9.2 percent wind energy - the highest percentage of any school in the eastern U.S. Nick Stamos, vice president of campus operations, said, "Dickinson was pleased to be involved in this wonderful wind-energy project. Clean energy is high on our list of energy priorities."

According to John Hanger, president and CEO of PennFuture, "The individuals and institutions we are honoring are a new breed of American heroes. Together, they've created the environmental benefits of planting 19 million trees. They've avoided as much air pollution as removing 34,000 cars from the road. And they've increased our domestic security by reducing our dependence on foreign oil. With their leadership, our region is building the new renewable energy future at a record pace."

The honors were given in cooperation with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Green Power Partnership, the U.S. Department of Energy, Philadelphia Regional Office, and the Mid-Atlantic Renewable Energy Coalition's Clean Your Air Campaign.

PennFuture, which has offices in Harrisburg, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, is a statewide public interest membership organization that advances policies to protect and improve the state's environment and economy.

A private, national liberal arts college of 2,200 students, Dickinson is located in south central Pennsylvania and is known for its innovative curriculum and international education programs. In September 1783, the school became the first college chartered in the newly recognized nation.
