Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship Recipient - Coe College

Alicia Crowl of Ottumwa, Iowa, a senior at Coe College in Cedar Rapids, has been named a recipient of the 2002-2003 Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship. As part of the award, Crowl will receive up to $30,000 to complete her undergraduate education.

Crowl, the daughter of Jack and Miki Crowl, is pursuing a double major in psychology and religion at Coe, with a minor in Spanish. She is studying in Costa Rica this fall, where she says she hopes to deepen her knowledge and compassion for those who are less fortunate.

Last year, Crowl volunteered at the Linn County Child Development Center, where she says she discovered a “passion” to help children with special needs. She has also played on Coe’s volleyball team.

After graduation, Crowl plans to pursue a dual master’s degree in social work and divinity.

The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation, based in Lansdowne, Va., operates one of the nation’s most generous scholarship programs. It provides up to $30,000 annually to students representing two groups:  student transferring from community colleges to four-year schools and juniors and seniors continuing at their current four-year schools.

Crowl is one of 79 undergraduate college students in 37 states and Washington, D.C., who have been selected for the scholarship, given to idealistic, intelligent and involved students to help carry out their dreams for a better world.

Coe, which is located near the heart of downtown Cedar Rapids, is a selective, four-year private, residential college founded in 1851.
