George Bush Sr. to speak at Coe College

The Honorable George H. W. Bush, forty-first president of the United States and father of President George W. Bush, will be the inaugural speaker in Coe College’s newly created Clark Lecture Series. Bush will speak at Coe on Thursday, Feb. 27, 2003 at 7:30 p.m. in Sinclair Auditorium.

The Clark Lecture Series was created to share the views of distinguished world leaders whose work has shaped and altered the course of events in our era,” said Coe president James Phifer in his invitation to President Bush. “Mr. President, I feel strongly that there can be no better choice than you to introduce this series to the citizens of eastern Iowa.”

At Coe, Bush will speak on the topic of his choice and respond to questions from the audience.

George Bush was elected President of the United States on Nov. 8, 1988, serving until Jan. 20, 1993. Mr. Bush was the first sitting vice president to ascend to the Presidency since Martin van Buren in 1837, and was the second American President to serve a full term without party control in either chamber of Congress.

Since leaving office, President Bush has written two books – “A World Transformed,” co-authored with General Brent Snowcroft, on foreign policy during his administration and “All The Best,” a collection of letters written throughout his life. He has visited 56 foreign countries and most of the 50 states, and has helped raise millions of dollars for a variety of charitable organizations.

President Bush and his wife, Barbara, have been married for 57 years and have five children and 14 grandchildren. They reside in Houston, Texas and Kennebunkport, Maine.

The Clark Lecture Series was established by – and is named in honor of – K. Raymond Clark, a member of the Coe class of ’30, whose distinguished career in law and education spanned more than 55 years.
